Liberty Lies will be on tour in the UK in November with Saliva, Soil and Sons of Texas, we hit up the band to see what they’ve been listening to while on the road. From Stevie Wonder to letlive., Enter Shikari and The 1975, the band offer a playlist to suit all tastes.
1. The Eagles – Waiting in the Weeds
If there is one song that epitomises life on the road for us, it’s this one. When we drive home from shows late at night, we have a slow playlist on in the van. It’s about five hours long, but this song always manages to come on when we’re 20 minutes away from home. The layers and depth to the song make it like no other and not many bands could write a song like this!
2. Queens of the Stone Age – I Sat By The Ocean
This one is a good summer feeling tune. We’re big fans of Queens and like to give this a spin in our old van in the summer. We don’t have air con, so if you close your eyes…
3. Enter Shikari – The Last Garrison
When this album dropped, it was on loop in our van for a while. But this track was one that stood out for us. This is always a great track to get you pumped up for a show. It’s a very positive track, which is a bit of a departure for us.
4. The Zac Brown Band – Colder Weather
You can’t just have rock music blasting all the time! This is one of those songs, you just choose a vocal line and sing it at the top of your lungs, while other drivers look at you like you’ve lost the plot haha.
5. Biffy Clyro – Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies
As soon as this song comes on, everyone grabs for the air drum sticks and tries to get the intro timing right. We fail every time, but we’re getting closer. Standard Biffy track. Massive chorus, catchy hooks and still managing to be really obscure.
6. Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke
This could have been any of Stevie’s hits to be honest. On shuffle, you wait for one of these tunes to come on and it gets you dancing in your seat. It just puts you in a good mood for the show ahead.
7. The 1975 – Chocolate
The 1975 would probably be one of our main guilty pleasures, but so many people in the rock world seem to like them now, that it’s acceptable. This song is just effortlessly cool. A lot of bands will look to this band for writing melodies as well!
8. letlive. – Younger
As a band, we love all three of letlive’s records. This is one of the stand out tracks for us, that gets a lot of love in the van. The anthemic chorus on this just gets you pumped up for a show.
9. Rage Against the Machine – Testify
We actually covered this on our last tour in the summer. We played this on repeat in the van, and when looking for a song to cover, this one just made sense. That riff gets everybody bouncing. Some more Tom Morello heroics in this track as well.
10. Toto – Africa
You HAVE to have some eighties cheese on a roadtrip playlist. It should be the law. It just helps you pass the time, squeeling the chorus vocals on this classic. There are loads more embarrassing songs like this on our playlist, but this has to be the best one.
West Midlands five piece Liberty Lies have previously toured with the likes of Shinedown, Halestorm and Magnum across the UK and Europe, but their latest efforts have also earned them a spot on a UK tour with Saliva, Soil and Sons of Texas this November, alongside appearances at a number of summer festivals including Fort Fest.
You can listen below to the band’s latest ace new single, “Are You Listening?” – recorded with Romesh Dodangoda (Sylosis, FFAF, Bring Me The Horizon, Motorhead and more).
Speaking about the new single, drummer Adam Stevens said, “This is our heaviest song to date, and the one that we are most proud of. We’ve managed to find the sound that we have been trying to capture for years. The song was born out of frustration in the practice room and with the industry itself.“
