J Mascis - Elastic Days (Sub Pop)
8
Dinosaur Jr. frontman returns with their brand-new solo venture, Elastic Days, showing that there is no such thing as slowing down for him, creatively speaking. J Mascis’ voice sounds more haunting and melodically elegant than ever on Elastic Days, still sounds lazy good but that’s the beauty of it, because the way he communicates with us with his hypnotic voice and distinct solos with the beautiful acoustics is striking effective.
Like its predecessors, Elastic Days was recorded at J’s own Bisquiteen studio and there are a few guest vocal spots, including old mates Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion, etc.), Zoë Randell (Luluc) among others. Elastic Days deepens and expands his emotional range, but at no point is Mascis trying to reinvent himself, he is just doing is own thing and that’s more than enough to make his music seem powerful, spiritual and compelling beautiful.
