Marissa Nadler – For My Crimes (Sacred Bones Records) 2018
6
By this point in time, Marissa Nadler has got us used to a monochrome and somewhat vintage sounding sweetness in her repertoire. And in For My Crimes, the songstress returns sounding faithful only to herself. The opening title-track sets the dark but delicate tone very well, and from then onward we are treated to intimate arrangements and singing that make us feel as if we are in the room with Nadler. Her only “crime” (no pun intended) in this record is a feeling of “sameness” throughout the tracklist, but the tightrope between consistency and repetitiveness is very hard to walk on. That being said, For My Crimes is a solid effort, with a perfect mood for the coming winter.
