Amber Coffman - City Of No Reply (Columbia Records) 2017

Ok, lets be completely honest here, I am a man who judges books by covers, and who carries this travesty of a judgment to albums as well.

So, when you get past the truly rubbish cover – and even past the dearth of information on the social media and website – and just judge Amber Coffman on her musical output… Well. Let me tell you, it’s a stone cold heartbreaker of a voice that will meet you.

Jazzy, soulful, and with just enough production trickery in the mix to keep you clinging on despite the surface being so distracting. Hers is a voice that trickles and slides like honey. The music is a pulsing, seventies echoing stripped back lounge affair. The songs are lyrical and attention grabbing, and her personality shines through.

Whatever it is they say you have if you can’t turn away and have to keep watching/listening/reading – she has it, she has it in spades. City Of No Reply is a truly worthy additional to your collection, and her voice towers and washes around you, dizzying and beguiling. Give it a go, and thank me later.
