Cloud Nothings - Last Building Burning (Wichita Recordings) 2018
7
The new studio effort from Cleveland quartet Cloud Nothings is a bit different from their 2017’s album Life Without Sound… ok, maybe that’s a huge understatement. LWS exceled in the department of craftsmanship with the band focused in their songwriting chops by exploring their pop sensibilities. Last Building Burning, on the other hand, is all about the explosive nature of a rock band that seems eager to capture the rawness and heaviness of their live performances. Don’t get me wrong, they still show you multiple glimpses of their pop sensibility, but Cloud Nothings have successful changed gears showcasing not only their maturity but also the impressive range of their songwriting skills.
Last Building Burning is an explosive 30-minute record, but it’s worth referencing a track like “Dissolution”, which runs for almost 11 minutes and is perhaps the most important track on the record, working as the perfect counterweight for all the blistering violence and urgency that runs throughout the album. Cloud Nothings are yet another band adding vitality and urgency to rock music in this era.
