Rancid - Trouble Maker (Epitaph Records) 2017

Rancid are renowned for their blazing punk rock sound. The Berkeley heroes are a brash, often harsh, musical institution who’ve been playing fast paced music for over 26 years.

Lead by the enigmatic Tim Armstrong, the band have created a new collection of songs in the form of Trouble Maker. Trouble Maker does rely on simple guitar riffs and gritty vocals from Armstrong. It’s a record that doesn’t have the same intensity as past efforts, it doesn’t swoop into the head or alter the punk name. And although it’s crafted well, it doesn’t hold up when the beat comes crashing in, that beat and intense energy we expect from the legends.

With that being said, there is a few songs that will fill the listener with punk joy. “Telegraph Avenue” is an instant savior, with its melodic guitar strokes and grungy vocals from Armstrong. And “Say Goodbye To Our Heroes” which is a poignant tribute to days gone by.
